Anya Skidan

Anya Skidan returns to NYC with a show at The Bitter End tonight (01.29)

Before you make plans for the evening, you might want to consider heading over to The Bitter End to see Anya Skidan back from her cross-country travels and ready to premiere some new tracks from her upcoming full-length release. While best known for carving a unique niche into psychedelic folk's headspace, lately she's been pummeling her soundscapes with noisy electronica and restless beats. It's an unexpected change for a Brooklyn-by-Moscow artist always taking us somewhere we've never journeyed before. I'm excited to hear the new material when it drops next month - in the meantime, check out an old, out there track, streaming below. - Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Skaters win The Deli Writers' Best of 2012 Poll for Emerging NYC Artists

Deli-rious beings,

In our insanely convoluted (but SUPERBLY accurate) system governing our Year End Poll for Emerging NYC Artist, our writers have a rather influential vote. Here are the results of this specific poll (top 3 positions only).

Quite unexpectedly, indie guitar-pop trio Skaters (pictured) took home the gold (the band is currently recording their debut LP, needless to say we are looking forward to it!), with the silver going to electro-pop masters St. Lucia and 10 bands getting a sliver of bronze.

Weekly Feature: Anya Skidan plays Pinebox RockShop on 12.15

Anya Skidan is a young Brooklynite unafraid to throw herself decidedly at life's shadows, attempting to illuminate some psychedelic light over her settings. We enjoyed her performance at our flagship CMJ show at Pianos, and recommend you go see her live since you'll have three opportunity in December: she's playing Pinebox Rockshop on 12.15, Pete's Candy Store on 10.18 and Goodbye Blue Monday on 12.29. NYC Artists on the rise: Anya Skidan, live at Bowery Electric on 07.26

Anya Skidan is a young Brooklyn based singer songwriter who's not afraid to charge her tunes with melancholy and sadness. Haunted with emotion, her voice floats on a layer of sparse, dreamy tracks. In the first song off of her LP ‘Shine the Brightest,’ her raw, natural voice has an eerie vibe reminiscent of a darker Kimya Dawson. The track, “Spiritual”, sets an interesting tone for the whole album, and showcases Skidan’s knack for portraying deep emotions and drastic tones. "Hidden Treasures" (streaming below) and “Soft and Gentle” have a more up-tempo feel, while “Summer is Gone” sounds like some kind of nightmarish litany where the singing-in-the-round technique is used, in conjunction with a an arrangement full of mallets and other percussions, to enanche the loss of the warm season. This is a budding artist we should keep an ear on. Anya Skidan will be performing on July 26 at Bowery Electric in New York, NY.
