Artists on Trial

The Cave Girls are our June Artist of the Month!

The Cave Girls are our June artist of the month! Robin Campbell and Stone Age Sara have gotten down the art of creating simple, upbeat, fun Neanderthal garage rock. With bassist Lizz Weiler as the band’s newest addition, the trio is returning to the KC music scene with a primordial vengeance.

The Deli: Down and dirty: 1 sentence to describe your music. What is it?

Stone Age Sara: Stripped-down rock ‘n roll with a prehistoric punch.

The Deli: Give us some background on the band. How long have you had this particular lineup?

Sara: Liz Lightning (Weiler) joined us on bass in the summer of 2013. Before Liz, Stephanie Williams (Katy Guillen & The Girls, Claire and the Crowded Stage) played bass with us for a couple years, and is on our first CD. Our original bass player was Nikki Love. Liz and Robin have played music together for years, so Liz is a natural fit. We are really grateful to have her!

We have worked with a couple really cool lead guitarists: Meredith McGrade (Wick and the Tricks, Morningglories) and most recently Kelly Nightengale (The Spook Lights). Kelly recorded with us on a song we’re about to release called “Let’s Go!”

The Deli: What do you have coming up?

Sara: This summer is pretty busy! We are playing at the Free State Film Festival in Lawrence. Our music is featured in the film Replay by Marlo Angell with WOLF (Women of Lawrence Film), which is showing at the festival, and our set will be at The Granada on Sunday, June 29.

We’ll also be featured on a CD compilation of The Pandoras’ covers by garage rock bands from all over the world. It’ll be released sometime this year for the 30th anniversary of their It’s About Time record. We’re excited to be a part of something so global!

And we’re releasing a 3 song EP this summer too. Can’t wait!

The Deli: What does supporting local music mean to you?

Sara: As musicians, keeping up with what fellow musicians are up to and being sincere and encouraging of each other. Everyone knows how good it can feel when someone acknowledges your work in a positive way. That can go a long way for a musician. We put a lot of ourselves out there.

Liz: I would say supporting the local scene, supporting fellow musicians, friends, etc.

The Deli: Who are your favorite local musicians right now?

Robin: Whichever I am watching at a given time... I am blown away at how good the local bands are around here. This must be what Detroit felt like in the ‘70s. I'm really impressed with Expo 70's meditative heavy rock with no lyrics. Also, recently I caught The Big Iron and The Philistines at recordBar; both were excellent! The Big Iron's new record is 4 stars!!

Sara: Too many to list, so many I need to catch up on.

The Deli: Who are your favorite not-so-local musicians right now?

Robin: Those Darlins. They're playing recordBar in August... GO! Their show is great! I am also really digging some instrumental music from an artist called Bonobo.

Sara: I freakin LOVE Dinero out of Fort Collins.

The Deli: What is your ultimate fantasy concert bill to play on?

Robin: I would love to play a festival with other KC/Lawrence bands/musicians for 3 days and camp out! I've always wanted to try playing a big multiple-day music festival.

Sara: I don’t have one… But I sometimes think it would have been fun to be a back-up singer for the Kinks… except for the fighting.

Liz: The Runaways.

The Deli: A music-themed Mount Rushmore. What four faces are you putting up there?

Robin: Hmm. I always try not to choose artists over each other, they all bring their own special gifts, but I guess I'd say John Lennon, George Harrison, Aretha Franklin & Loretta Lynn. John & George for their sincere love preaching and spiritual awareness. Aretha for her empowering woman essence. Loretta Lynn for her authenticity, and her courageous and sincere songwriting.

Sara: Chuck Berry, Ray Davies, Harry Nilsson, Tiny Tim. All dudes and no drummers, I know, but that’s who comes to mind. They’re personal favorites, and I find them to be largely undervalued.

Liz: Lemmy, Joan Jett, King Buzzo (just to see if they could get his hair right), and Dimebag Darrell.

The Deli: What other goals do The Cave Girls have for 2014?

Sara: We talk sometimes at practice about just having made it through another crazy week. There’s so much everyone is up against these days: personally, locally, globally. Liz put it really well at our last practice. She said “I just wanna rock!” and we were all like “YEAH!”, so that sounds like a good goal!

The Deli: Where can we find you on the web?

Girls:We’re most up to date on Facebook, though we’d sure love to find a better way! Like a lot of bands, we feel pretty bummed when we post something on our page and less than 10% of our fans even see it. We’re also on Bandcamp.

The Deli: Always go out on a high note. Any last words of wisdom for the Deli audience?

The Cave Girls: Ooga ooga Ug!Ug!

The Cave Girls are:
Robin Campbell: vocals, guitar
Stone Age Sara: vocals, drums
Lizz Weiler: bass, vocals

Artists on Trial: Middle Twin

We will be highlighting some of the artists playing The Deli KC’s showcase for Middle of the Map Fest next Thursday, April 3 on the Seen Merch Stage at The Riot Room patio. Today’s Artist on Trial is Lawrence’s own Middle Twin.

If you haven’t heard of Middle Twin yet, no doubt you will. The five-piece collective stemmed from the electronic DJ duo Brain Food, and is quickly gaining traction in the area with its dancey grooves and frontwoman Demi Renault’s striking vocals. We talked with keyboardist Joel Martin and guitarist Eric Davis to find out a little more about the group.

The Deli: Down and dirty: 1 sentence to describe your music. What is it?

Middle Twin: I think Ink called us “peculiar art rock.” We liked that. We have a lot of pop influence though, so we are peculiar art pop.

The Deli: Give us some background on the band.

Middle Twin: Joel started this project a couple years ago as a kind of a DJ-electronic thingy called Brain Food. Demi and Eric joined in November of 2012 and it became more of a band thingy. We then added Jonny [Fitzgerald] and Isaac [Flynn] and eventually decided to change our name to Middle Twin. We’ve been playing as Middle Twin for about 6 months now.

The Deli: What have been your biggest accomplishments as a band?

Middle Twin: Probably the time we drove all night from Austin to Lawrence and made it back in time to catch the India Palace lunch buffet.

The Deli: You are releasing your EP City of Gold this weekend. What can we expect?

Middle Twin: Seven unique, well-crafted songs with very high production quality. We had a lot of fun making it, so hopefully it’ll be a lot of fun to listen to.

The Deli: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Middle of the Map this year?

Middle Twin: We’ll go with Gary Numan. I’ve heard his live show is crazy.

The Deli: What does supporting local music mean to you?

Middle Twin: Towns that have great local music scenes must first have great local bands. Bands need to prove themselves to get support, not the other way around. The best thing you can do is be aware of what’s happening in local music. If you think something’s good, for the love of God, tell people! High-quality local music is an amazing phenomenon. There are local bands making great music and they are doing it on practically no budget. Those musicians who achieve that deserve all the support possible.

The Deli: Who are your favorite local musicians right now?

Middle Twin: I’d like to give some love to two Lawrence bands that’ll be playing Middle of the Map and who a lot Kansas City folk might not know yet. Forrester and Psychic Heat are both incredible bands that put on amazing live shows and write really cool, interesting music.

The Deli: Who are your favorite not-so-local musicians right now?

Middle Twin: We’re all pretty into James Blake and Toro y Moi right now. A really sweet band from Montreal called TOPS came through Lawrence recently and we caught their show at Replay. We’ve been bumping their tracks for the past couple days.

The Deli: What is your ultimate fantasy concert bill to play on?

Middle Twin: Hmm… Let’s go with a bill with us, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead.

The Deli: A music-themed Mount Rushmore. What four faces are you putting up there and why?

Middle Twin: Eric: Brian Wilson, George Martin, Thom Yorke, and Quincy Jones. I'm not sure if any musician can say they've never been heavily influenced (knowingly or unknowingly) by at least one of those men at some point in their lives.

Joel: James Blake, Damon Albarn, Steven Ellison, St. Vincent. For their beautiful music.

The Deli: Where can we find you on the web?

Twitter: @middle_twin
Instagram: middle_twin

The Deli: What other goals does Middle Twin have for 2014?

Middle Twin: I think our main goal is to keep improving as musicians and as artists. We’re constantly trying to improve our live show. I think the best thing we can do for 2014 is get back in the studio and get better and better at writing and recording music.

The Deli: Always go out on a high note. Any last words of wisdom for the Deli audience?

Middle Twin is:
Demi Renault - vocals
Eric Davis - guitar
Isaac Flynn - drums
Joel Martin - keys
Jon Fitzgerald - bass

Tonight, Middle Twin and Forrester will both be celebrating the release of their EPs at The Bottleneck, with a free show. The Phantastics, and Narkalark also play. Facebook event page.

If you want to catch them in KC, come by The Riot Room on Friday, where they will celebrate the KC release of the album with Antennas Up and Rev Gusto. Facebook event page.

Middle Twin will also be at The Deli KC’s showcase at Middle of the Map Fest next Thursday, April 3. They will take the Seen Merch stage on The Riot Room patio at 9:00 p.m.

Middle Twin recently released the video for “Savoir Faire,” from the City of Gold EP. It is directed by Weston Getto Allen (Getto Art). Watch it below.

The Deli: What other goals does Mad Libby have for 2013?

Mad Libby: Mad Libby plans on finishing up recording in 2013 and playing some out-of-town shows.

Artists on Trial: Maps for Travelers

For the next few weeks, we’ll be featuring artists playing the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows, sponsored by Midwest Music Foundation.

Maps for Travelers is a collective of four veteran Kansas City musicians who have toured around the country with a heavy indie rock sound. The band has shared the stage with national acts like Fucked Up, The Jealous Sound, Just Like Vinyl, and others. We find out a little about the band’s upcoming debut LP and its influences.

The Deli: Down and dirty: 1 sentence to describe your music. What is it?

Maps for Travelers: Four guys paying homage to the most crushing alternative post-rock bands of the ‘90s while putting our own story and sonic point of view on it, with trumpet somehow in there too.

The Deli: Let’s talk about your much anticipated upcoming LP Broken Antlers. What can we expect?

Maps: This record has collectively been one of the most stressful records of all of our musical careers. We have fought for every note, every idea, every beat, and every lyric to be a true picture of who we are and what’s to come. From dynamic chaos to chilling, vibed-out soundscapes, we feel like we are covering it all. Most people that have listened to it say that we have cut out all the fat and focused all the sounds into a powerful work of music. We hope many will agree. This record is made to see live; we put all of these songs through the ringer of playing live and really tuned into being honest with ourselves about how the energy of every moment felt to all of us on stage as we are performing. Every song except for an interlude and an outro have undergone that intense scrutiny and, at the end of the day, we just love it and are excited to share it with everyone we can.

The Deli: What other plans and goals do you guys have this year?

Maps: Release this record, tour in support of this record, do some splits with some of our favorite artists. Make a video or two for a couple of these songs. And tour more and start to look at making another record in 2014.

The Deli: What does supporting local music mean to you?

Maps: Supporting local music to us means that we go to other bands’ shows even when we aren't playing. Getting interested in what others are doing and encouraging the community of musicians to strive for their best. Being in a band can feel very competitive at points and we are trying to do the opposite of that; music is subjective. Everyone has a place and we are looking for people that feel the same way we do and are willing to take it to the highest level and create an even more engaged local music scene. That’s our take on it. We want to encourage people in general to support more, and by working together with other local musicians, we can create our own awesome community to launch out from here and come home to.

The Deli: Who are your favorite local musicians right now?

Maps: Right now we are really loving Cowboy Indian Bear, Clairaudients, Bears and Company, The Casket Lottery, Jorge Arana Trio, Radkey, The Dead Girls, Sundiver, The Slowdown, In The Grove, Wise Guy, Regret, The Informer, The Architects, The Calamity Cubes, honestly we could go on for a minute! So many bands just playing so well right now! We are super pumped on being from KC.

The Deli: Who are your favorite not-so-local musicians right now?

Maps: Title Fight, Caspian, Junius, La Dispute, Native, Local Natives, Now Now, Russian Circles, O Brother, The Life and Times.

The Deli: What is your ultimate fantasy concert bill to play on?

Maps: Quicksand, Hum, Failure, Thursday, Nine Inch Nails.

The Deli: Would you rather spend the rest of your life on stage or in the recording studio?

Maps: The stage, granted we can look like our awesome selves for the rest of our lives! Performing is where it’s at for us, the interaction and the rush you get from playing and really just bouncing all that energy around. There is no substitute for that anywhere!

The Deli: A music-themed Mount Rushmore. What four faces are you putting up there and why?

Maps: This is nearly impossible to cover the pillars for us, so many and for so many different reasons. We will just pick the closest to our generation that really have pushed on us to strive for nothing less than everything we have.

Jeff Rickley (Thursday): He started a movement that changed our whole decade of music for us.

Walter Schreifels (Quicksand): We wouldn't be doing what we are doing without him laying the foundation for our style of music.

Allen Epley (Shiner, The Life and Times): Just an amazing songwriter and someone from here that has shown the way for a lot of us Kansas City musicians.

Darryl Palumbo (Glassjaw): Just collectively, Maps For Travelers has come together so much over his band’s music and the way he put it all out there and commanded such an incredible band. We constantly are referencing Glassjaw tracks when writing music together.

The Deli: All right, give us the rundown. Where all on this big crazy web can you be found?

The Deli: Always go out on a high note. Any last words of wisdom for the Deli audience?

Maps: Tell someone you love them today, hug a friend, and dont be scared to get in the pit and always help the fallen get up.

Maps for Travelers is:
Zach Brotherton – vocals, guitar
RL Brooks – vocals, guitar, trumpet
Kevin Medina – bass
Derek White – drums

You can see Maps for Travelers this Saturday, February 2, where they will be playing the second MidCoast Takeover fundraiser at Riot Room. The group will be playing at 11:15, along with Various Blonde, Drop A Grand, and Six Percent. Tickets available here.

Artists on Trial: Rev Gusto

Rev Gusto is fairly new to the local music scene, recently releasing its debut EP. The energetic and revivalistic garage pop Rev Gusto creates complements much of the music in the local scene while also putting its own stamp on it. With several upcoming shows, including a fundraiser for MidCoast Takeover, this 5-piece group introduces itself and tells us what to expect.

The Deli: Down and dirty: 1 sentence to describe your music. What is it?

Rev Gusto: Indie garage pop music that is perfect for warm nights and backyard BBQs.

The Deli: Tell us about your debut self-titled EP. For those who haven’t gotten it yet, what can they expect?

Rev:Our new EP has five tracks. They showcase a diverse variety of tunes, catchy hooks, and guitar riffs.

The Deli: What does supporting local music mean to you?

Rev: It means going out to late shows, having a good time, and loving the music our city has to offer.

The Deli: Who are your favorite “local” musicians right now?

Rev: We have a lot of favorite's including The ACB's, The Sluts, She's A Keeper, and Zach Jackson & the Funky Few.

The Deli: Who are your favorite not-so-local musicians right now?

Rev: We decided that we each have one choice. So here they are in no particular order: The Wave Pictures, Ike Reilly, The Flaming Lips, The Kooks, and Allo' Darlin.

The Deli: What is your ultimate fantasy concert bill to play on?

Rev: We would love to be on a bill with any one of Jack White's projects, The Black Keys, and The Flaming Lips. With an encore including Paul McCartney and The (reincarnated) Ramones.

The Deli: Would you rather spend the rest of your life on stage or in the recording studio?

Rev: On stage; no question. Our favorite part is feeding off the energy of playing a show and putting it into our music.

The Deli: A music-themed Mount Rushmore. What four faces are you putting up there and why?

Rev: Bob Dylan, best American songwriter of the 20th century. Lou Reed, who made it possible for garage bands like us to exist. J Dilla, because he's the beat master. Otis Redding, one word: soul.

The Deli: All right, give us the rundown. Where all on this big crazy web can you be found?

Rev: We have a plethora of web pages. We can be found on Facebook, Twitter @revgusto, Soundcloud, Reverb Nation, and we just recently joined iTunes.

The Deli: Always go out on a high note. Any last words of wisdom for the Deli audience?

Rev: Our main goal is to enjoy ourselves and do what we love. We love to see people out to have fun along with us. We hope to be doing this for a while, so we hope The Deli can handle our meat.

Rev Gusto is:
Jerry Frederick
Sam Frederick
Quinn Hernandez
Peter Beatty
Shaun Crowley

There are plenty of opportunities to see Rev Gusto perform in the very near future. They’ll be playing tonight, January 3, at recordBar and tomorrow, January 4, at Jackpot. On Monday, January 28 they’ll be at Czar. Rev Gusto was also announced as one of the performers for the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser show on Saturday, February 16 at The Brick, along with Not A Planet and David Hasselhoff on Acid.
