Lunifred Benjamin releases new single "Atheist Anthem"

Brooklyn-based musician, Lunifred Benjamin - who recently played Rough Trade - crosses genre lines with his mellow prog-folk, while evoking a rootsier-sounding Destroyer with a voice reminiscent of Girls’ Christopher Owens.  In his most recent release, “Atheist Anthem” Benjamin also strays away from common subjects, claiming “Nobody knows what happens when you die” and bringing up (unsurprisingly given the title) the topic of atheism in a rather casual tone.  Using strings and subtle guitar riffs, Lunifred Benjamin obviously enjoys to be in a category all his own, leaving us wondering what unexpected musical elements he can bring next. - Madeleine Grossman

Christopher Owens to Debut Solo Album

Okay, okay, so it was a little premature to assume former Girls frontman Christopher Owens had given up the musical ghost in favor of the runway, and we’re relieved to say the least.

Turns out, Owens is preparing to debut his first solo album Lysandre in January 2013. The album documents Owens’ first tour, where he falls in love with Lysandre, a girl working at a music festival. A concept album in its truest sense, Lysandre is exclusively in the key of A, contains diagetic sound effects, and tells its story chronologically. Owens shares his feelings about his endeavor:
I feel like this is the most focused effort I’ve ever made musically; telling a story from one song to the next in order of occurrence, making the album almost like one long song. A little bit like a musical. I’m very proud of it and happy it worked so well. I’m pleased to be able to share it with the world; its story, its music, its universal and classic themes. It’s a coming of age story, a road trip story, a love story. It’s a moment in time that has been captured and brought to life through art. For you, for me, for us. For what it’s worth.
Read more about the album and listen to the first two tracks in The FADER.

Owens premiers his solo act on Friday, November 9 at The Lodge at Regency Center. You can buy tickets here

Christopher Owens Broke Up Girls...To Become a Model?

After breaking up San Francisco garage pop duo Girls, former frontman Christopher Owens is taking a break to model.

CMU caught the artist doing his best blue steel for Yves Saint Laurent’s ready-to-wear line, Saint Laurent. Check it out in Vogue, which describes Owens's look as "very much like Kurt Cobain." Umm, let's not encourage the drugs or the modeling, thank you.

Remember better days in this performance of "Vomit" from 2011's Father, Son, Holy Ghost.
