Il Abanico

Weekly Feature: Il Abanico plays Rockwood on 11.30

Transplants Nicolas Losada and Julianna Ronderos have brought the vibrant colors of their native Columbia from their country, to our backyard. The duo - under the name Il Abanico -  has made Brooklyn their new home, and just might make things here a little more con vida for the rest of us. From the balloon-toting, floor tom stomping bear in latest video 'Keep Calling,' to the bilingual inventions of lead singer Juliana, their new EP 'Crossing Colors' weaves a cultural rainbow of shapes and sounds together that you won't need a passport to experience. - Read Mike Levine's interview with the band here, and see the band live on Friday November 11 at Rockwood Music Hall.

Deli CMJ Electro/Avant Pop Stages at The Delancey 10.18 with Wildlife Control, Dynasty Electric, Dinosaur Feathers, Il Abanico, Cultfever + more

DETAILS ABOUT THIS SHOW + STREAMING
COMPILATION OF ALL THE BANDS HERE

This is going to be the longest list of this whole series of announcements. On Thursday, we're once again taking over both floors of The Delancey with upstairs, a line-up of electro up-and-comers from all sides of the spectrum and downstairs, some creative pop gems fitting under the Avant Pop label, for a total of.. NINETEEN acts! So enough chit-chat, let's get to the list, because that is sure going to take up enough space.

Opening the (free!) upstairs show, Thomas Simon's ghostly mixes, followed by the bizarre folk-tronic experiments of Max Horwich's Sewing Machines, Cultfever's chaotic outputs and Railbird's more intimate creations. Next up, we've got three out-of-towners, i.e SF's Maus Haus, Philly's electro/hip hop artist Lushlife, and finally, Anomie Belle, from Seattle, co-headlining the show with NYC's own Dynasty Electric. Then, taking it to the later hours of the evening, Ducky, and Drop Electric (coming from DC).

Downstairs, our two headliners will be Dinosaur Feathers (top picture) and Wildlife Control, who both released this year a delicious new album, second for the former and a first for the latter. We've also got, on this stage, three acts coming from Los Angeles: openers American Royalty, shoegaze-pop band Letting Up Despite Great Faults, and Kiven, who will be closing the show. Add to this Columbian transplants Il Abanico, Conveyor, whom we covered in our last print issue, the catchy jams of five-piece Modern Rivals and finally, Santah, coming from Chicago, and.. I believe WE'RE DONE! In the pictures: Dynasty Electric & Wildlife Control.

THE NEW HIGHWAY HYMNAL

Lost Lander

Even though only front man Hadden Stemp meets the drinking age, last year, psych-blues outfit The New Highway Hymnal started working their asses off playing basement shows, DIY fests, and local clubs around Boston week in, week out. Their hard work paid off because not only did these young musicians garner a cult following, but they also developed their sound, and slowly came into their own artistically. See them on March 16 at The Tiniest Bar in Austin, TX as part of the Vanya Records/Fort Point Recordings "Austin T Party" showcase.

OLDJACK

Knowing how rare it is two find great musicians, it's hard to believe that a band like Oldjack - with eight members and counting - can be as tight and connected. Lead vocals dripping with soul, catchy back up vocals and rocking bluesy guitar riffs come together harmoniously for this nitty gritty boot-stompin' band from Boston.

NIGHT FRUIT

On "Dark Horse," their follow up to their debut "Triangles EP," Night Fruit blend a shoegaze dreaminess with sinister post-apocalyptic undertones created by the otherworldy-ness of lead singer Amanda Dellevigne’s vocals. her voice rises and falls, dreamy and distant and rides Jonathan Gill’s guitar like a stripper on a pole -- all hips and swinging around.

Deli Presents: Il Abanico, Tan Vampires, Pack of Morleys, Melt -- Concert Review 7/14/2011

tan vampires

It was a perfect night for the first in a series of artist showcases that The Deli Magazine is hosting at P.A.’s Lounge in Somerville this summer. Slightly overcast skies, temperatures in the mid-seventies, locals and hipsters manning the stoops and strolling the sidewalks of Union Square. It was quintessential summer in the city.
