Austin's Open Submission Results for The Deli Magazine's Year End Poll, 2013

Wow! We got almost twice as many submissions this year as we did last year. Thanks to everyone who helped spread the word and give bands a chance to have their music heard by critics all over the country. After tallying the votes for the Open Submissions stage of our Austin Year End Poll, it's time to release the results.

Please note that no editor was allowed to vote for bands in their own scene. The editors that voted on the Austin scene were: Q.D. Tran (Deli Philadelphia), Jordannah Elizabeth (Deli San Francisco), and Paolo De Gregorio (Deli NYC, Editor-In-Chief).

Acts advancing to our Readers/Fans Poll with a ranking above 6.5:

1. Criminal Birds (Indie Rock) - 7.3
2. Emily Wolfe (Songwriters) - 7.2
3. The Vliets (Psych Rock) - 7.2
4. Growl (Indie Pop/Rock) - 7
5. Hikes (Folk Pop) - 6.8
6. Danny Malone (Songwriters) - 6.8
7. Language Room (Alt Rock) - 6.6

Lake Lady and the Mountain Man (Soul/Indie Pop) - 6.3
Paula Maya (World Music) - 6.3

WHAT'S NEXT: These results end the first phase of the poll. In the next few days we'll unveil the artists nominated by our local jurors (mostly venue promoters and other industry people who know the Austin scene insode out), and we'll let our readers and writers influence the poll with their vote.

Thanks to all the acts who submitted to us. Our open submissions pool was truly a celebration of the diversity and richness of Austin's talent. Keep creating, keep supporting and stay tuned for your chance to vote!

Where Were You When The Mayan Apocalypse Went Down?

So the last day of the Mayan calendar has come upon us.  We should party like it's the end of the world.

Perhaps the most telling sign of the apocalypse is the Hipnautica reunion.  That's going down at Rusty's.

At Mohawk's, we've got Hardproof Afrobeat, Money Chicha, and Butcher Bear DJ.

The Red Eyed Fly will welcome the destruction of all that we know with EBM, Drifter, Black Thorn Halo, Hazard Hounds, and Fight Plan.

Deciding to put a positive spin on total annihilation, the good folks at The Parish are having a Beginning of The World party with Nadis Warriors, Blockhead, DrFameus (Allen Aucoin of The Disco Biscuits) plus "Live Painters, Poetry Readings, Live Floral Arrangements, Reiki and Energy Healing, Crystal Healing, other healing modalities; and more!!"  What's not to like?

The Beauty Ballroom is having Christmapocalypse with, oddly enough, Auto Body and Octopus Project DJ.

Over at Holy Mountain, they're just calling it a party with the Peligrosa 5 Year Anniversary party.

At Frank, they'll be taking a more somber approach with an Acoustic Night put on by Language Room, The Couch, and Dawn & Hawkes.

The Dirty Dog will do it in metal, with Closed Hand Promise, Dead Earth Politics, Course of Ruin, Truman Syndrome, Immerse, and Abiotic.

While over at Red 7, they've calling it Party At The End of The World, and have managed to snag Assacre, Spiritual Wives, Visitors, Pack Of Wolves, Krum Bums, Employer, Employee, At All Cost, and Recover.

So get ye henceforth and enjoy the end of the world!

Language Room Return Home on 8/4 For Gig @ ND

Austin based Indie/Alt band Language Room self-released their newest EP, Skin & Heart & Lungs, earlier this year. With the help of their fans on Kickstarter, they raised enough money to go into the studio with mega-producer Dwight Baker and I think the results show for themselves. With another successful Kickstarter campaign, they raised enough money to get a tour underway and they will be coming back home to Austin, Texas on 8/4 for a set at ND. These guys have worked hard and done it the right way. They deserve all your support on that night. Plus, why wouldn’t you want to see this live?
