Laser Background

Weekend Warrior, April 7 - 9

The world continues its trend of being a chaotic and confusing place. So as the week reaches its tail end, the Pilam Human BBQ XXXIX will be offering a refreshing daylong reprieve this Saturday combining music, eats and whatever your debaucherous heart desires. The noon till midnight billing will include nearly 20 acts in all. Among them, the incisive lyricism of Sad13 delivered on an enthusiastic uplifting danceable platform and the emotive electro-pop/rock of Brandon Can’t Dance, who hovers between a solemn solitude and then swims in a sea of infectious grooves. With a new album Dark Nuclear Bogs set to arrive on April 28, the candy-coated psych-carnival of Laser Background will alter one’s perspective, while the reverberating, relatable melodies of Clique lock into your head as will the spellbinding narratives of this year’s Deli Philly Best Emerging Alt Rock Artists Poll winner, Curtis Cooper.  These are but a small sampling of the lineup, which can view in full HERE, so head over to Pilam for a day of sonic sustenance. - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, October 28 - 30

Technically, Halloween falls on Monday. However, the autumnal celebration of dastardly deeds and debauchery will be in full flux this Saturday as Underground Arts opens its doors for the 7th Annual TJ Kong Halloween Costume Ball Rock N Roll Murdershow. Along with a haunting stir of booze-saturated country blues perpetuated by Kong & The Atomic Bomb, the candy-coated, Andy Moholt-led daydream down the rabbit-hole, better known as Laser Background, will provide their twist on The Zombies’ catalogue. The attitude-infused rumbling reverberation of Straw Hats and the serenading psych-pop grip of Grubby Little Hands will be joined by the slinky, streamlined, funk-fueled fire of MINKA and the rippling surf-psych wave of Ceramic Animal to seal this evening. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Ursula Opening for Laser Background at BMA Aug. 28

Experimental noise-punk outfit Ursula is just the type of weird that Philly enjoys nurturing. The dizzying guitarwork stands at the forefront, firing at you with unapologetic defiance. The Boston transplants bring a refreshing air of unpredictability - never afraid to test the boundaries with each sonic excursion. Ursula will be opening for Laser Background, the psych-pop project from the mind of Andy Molholt, this evening at DIY space BMA. They'll also be playing host to Vermont's Grape Room and Cali's Banny Grove. BMA, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $7, All Ages - Alexis V.

Laser Background Record Release Show at Ortlieb's May 13

Correct, the new LP from the Andy Moholt-led musical vehicle of Laser Background, was officially released today via La Société Expéditionnaire/Endless Daze. The album floats on a cozy cloud of psych-pop, cruising in the upper atmosphere of melodic mystery. The tones are invitingly transmitted from somewhere out there; however, invigorating trance-inducing tropical warmth maintains a sense of closeness twinkling in a mystical manner magnetizing the fantasy. Tonight, Ortlieb’s hosts a performance punctuating the album’s arrival. With their own new record Suspended Animation due out in roughly a month’s time, the infectious crisply stacked tunes of Brooklyn’s Leapling occupy the middle slot. The dreary captivating grit of Beth Israel kicks open the doors. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. 3rd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ (Photo by Natalie Piserchio) - Michael Colavita

New Laser Background LP Available for Streaming

Stereogum has premiered the new album from Laser Background, the brainchild of Philly music veteran Andy Molholt. Correct is the second LP for Laser Background out May 13 on La Société Expéditionnaire/Endless Daze. Molholt has been making infectious psych-pop for a while now, first with his previous band The Armchairs and as Laser Background for the past four years. The shape-shifting synths and Molholt’s dreamy vocals are center stage in his solo project, where he has been expanding on his eclectic vision. Check out the album via Stereogum and pre-order it right HERE.
