Lushes

Suspenseful rock from NYC: Lushes open for Kurt Vile + play Baranquilla on 11.15

If, in the US, the music equivalent of horror movies was as popular as its visual counterpart, a band like Brooklyn's Lushes would be very happy indeed - although, to stay in charachter, they would frown and stare at you lifelessly. For cultural reasons, middle Europe (who has always been ok with celebrating tragic despair) is a lot more open to strident atmospheres and dissonant sounds than America. No wonder then Lushes is currently traveling through places like Stockholm and Berlin (where they opened for Kurt Vile), finding audiences who appreciate the kind of dark enterteinment they can provide. The trio recently released their full lenght debut "Service Industry," which features a series of raw, understated tunes celebrating tension, dissonance and aural desolation. The record forges a rather unique identity for this band, that will be performing live at Brooklyn's Baranquilla on Novbember 15.

Felte label party at Non Plus Ultra tonight with Sextile, The Tissues, Romy

Felte Records hosts a show tonight at the Non Plus Ultra, with a disparate lineup to welcome the darkest part of the year. Melbourne's new romantic punk Romy (A G E N D E R) shares new music from her eponymous project. With a debut EP around the corner, new shuffler The Tissues wipes Los Angeles again, and upstart occultists Sextile will raise the night — stream their debut album One Thousand Hands below. Brooklyn's Lushes, of the original show lineup, was called to support Kurt Vile before their Europe tour. Label owner Jeff Owens and Lucifersam spin songs at 9. $5 at the door. - Ryan Mo

Out In The Streets Festival bringing local music and art to Ridgewood, Queens this weekend (08.01 - 08.02)

Now in its 6th year, Out In the Streets Festival is back in action to bring your favorite indie bands to Queens for a weekend of art, food, fun, and music. Hosted at the historic Onderdonk House in Ridgewood, the outdoor fest is the smaller, DIY version of all the big summer music festivals that have competed for your attention and presence in the past few months. Since it began on a street corner in Bushwick in 2009, Out In the Streets has kept itself homegrown and independent but continues to grow every year, celebrating local artists and eateries in this two-day multimedia festival. The lineup includes bands like Mr Twin Sister, Total Slacker, The Love Supreme, Wild Yaks, Salt Cathedral and many more. The bands performing this weekend are all mostly NYC-based, and the lineup on Sunday is featuring local bands from Bushwick and Ridgewood. Full weekend passes are still available for only $35, with one day tickets going for $20, on sale here. Check out a Spotify compilation of all the performing bands here, or streaming below. - Sam O'Hara
