Where the Locals Are Going in Philly This NYE

Nice job, Philly! What looked a little scarce with local representation for New Year’s Eve has filled out into a variety of sweet shows that will have folks spread out all over Philly. Kat Kat Phest, in its fourth and final year, will be auld lang syning away at Everybody Hits with Creepoid and The Spirit of the Beehive, two bands that definitely deserve more of that national/international love and attention in 2016. A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Captured Track’s EZTV, and Mercury Girls have the indie-pop goodness on lockdown over at Johnny Brenda’s. The dancin’ fools can be found with the Making Time crew at Union Transfer, West Philadelphia Orchestra, Johnny Showcase & The Mystics, and Ill Doots at Underground Arts, and LOUDS and Cheerleader, at Ortlieb’s this year. Unfortunately, Nothing at Boot & Saddle is sold out, as you should’ve known that it would, but I’m a firm believer that you can get into any show that you really want to. You just need to get crafty. Happy Halloween & Don’t Get Arrested!

We love Halloween; however, we’re also not always the greatest planners. For those who actually have a costume but still aren’t sure where they’ll be getting into trouble tonight, please allow us to make a few suggestions. Surprisingly, the weekend before Halloween was rather a disappointment this year. We’re guessing that with the holiday falling on Thursday, people figured that it was close enough to the weekend to make it a long one. Hopefully, you were able to take off work tomorrow to fully enjoy the festivities. Or at least, you have a cool enough boss who can forgive you smelling like a dive bar while still having some residue of zombie makeup on at work.

Well, a good place to be where there will be no judgment this evening is the 4th annual TJ Kong Halloween Costume Ball Rock N Roll Murdershow at Underground Arts with Kong and the Atomic Bomb, Cold Fronts, Johnny Showcase, Purples (ex-Teeth), Manterial Girl and DJ Breakfast (Jonas Oesterle). This will surely be the place for fine up-and-coming local acts, drunken debauchery and human sacrifices - if you’re into that sort of thing like we are. If you’re looking to spend Halloween in a bigger space, the Philly staple for live concert craziness, Man Man, will be closing out their two-night Halloween run at Union Transfer with King Khan & The Shrines, MELT-BANANA and Hell Shovel. Another traditional Philly favorite is Making Time with this year’s party dubbed “Pure Halloween.” You’ll find the usual suspects raging to futuristic sounds.

Now, those are the bigger events on our radar. So if you are feeling like doing something kind of off the beaten path, there is Mercury Radio Theater, who will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their album The Death and Life of the Undead Boy, at Johnny Brenda’s with local burlesque mainstay Miss Rose and her lovelies. And for those who are in a giving mood on this unholy of evenings, you can find likeminded people at The Mitten for the Halloween Cover Show to Benefit the Philadelphia Student Union and at The Boot & Saddle, where our friends Iron will be hosting a benefit show for BuildOn.org, an organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education.

FESTIVUS MAXIMUS Making Time at Voyeur April 12

Dave P and the Making Time crew have put together their own mini-festival tonight at Voyeur. Featured this evening will be Making Time alums Delorean, buzzing R&B/electro-pop artist Autre Ne Veut (a.k.a. Arthur Ashin), Canadian art-popster Doldrums (a.k.a. Airick Woodhead), and barely-legal-to-drink-in-the-U.S., Montreal house producer Jacques Greene. Bang for the buck - you can’t really go wrong with this hyper-rager! Voyeur, 1221 St. James St., 9pm, $12 adv/$15 door, 21+ - Alexis V.

The Dolphin Tavern Returns!

Our buddy Jersey Dan shared with us a pic of maintainence being done on The Dolphin Tavern (1539 S. Broad St.) sign a couple of weeks back. Well, according to Philly.com, the once seedy, dive bar will be re-opening next week on Wednesday, March 20 at 5:30pm (happy hour anyone?) - thanks to Dave P (Making Time), Sean Agnew (R5 Productions), Psydde Delicious (Delicious Boutique), Avrim Hornik and Mark Fichera (Four Corners Management). No real word yet on what to expect (except "some things have changed but most are just how you left them"), but we're pretty sure that the dominant Philly nightlife crew know how to party and draw a crowd. This time, it's in South Philly yo!

Weekend Warrior, July 20 - 22

Damn, it poured this morning! But hopefully that means the skies are all dried out, and The Making Time Summertime Hyper-Rager can go on unfettered tonight. Dave P and crew will be taking the party with Sleigh Bells, Phantogram and Twin Shadow to Festival Pier this evening, and their will also be an after-party at Morgan’s Pier where you can refuel with the PYT/Making Time Pop-Up Restaurant menu (that is, if your stomach can handle it with all the substances that you've consumed throughout the night) and dance until the crappy PA laws say you can't.
