Marian Hill

Weekend Warrior, September 1 - 4

September has arrived, and with it, comes the ceremonial conclusion of summer. However, before the sun-kissed season draws to a close, Ben Franklin Parkway plays host to a recently vested (6th overall) tradition Made In America. While an assortment acts will grace the various stages over, the 2-day event, the local contingent continues to grow. This Saturday includes the silky, serenading electro-pop of Marian Hill, the retrofitted, harmony-harnessing Queen of Jeans, the devastatingly tenacious, melodic whirlwind of Mannequin Pussy, and experimental instrumental textures meets sincere Americana-folk songwriting of (Sandy) Alex GAnd Sunday’s slate begins with PNB Rock, before a consecutive tandem that includes the heart-rendering, earnest elegance of Japanese Breakfast (whose Soft Sounds From Another Planet was our August Record of the Month) and the gritty, grab-the-wheel-and-drive indie rock of Beach Slang. Of course, the streets of Philadelphia will also be filled with bangers from Hova, Solange, Run the Jewels, Little Dragon, and many others. Hopefully the weather will hold out so that we can all enjoy a rad Labor Day Weekend in Philly! – Michael Colavita

New Music Video: "I Want You" - Marian Hill

We could probably never pull off a choreographed dance, but we certainly apreciate when it's done well. Marian Hill enlisted the help of some talented folks to film their music video for the single, "I Want You," at the YouTube Space NY. In one take to boot! Or should we say, "One time, one time, one time"? The performance was directed and choreographed by Ian Eastwood, and you can find "I Want You" on their full-length release, ACT ONE (Republic Records). (Photo by Pablo Amoretti)

New Video: "One Time" (The Wild Honey Pie Presents On The Mountain) - Marian Hill

Republic Records is scheduled to release Act One, the debut full-length album from Marian Hill, on June 24. They brought a special performance of “One Time” to The Wild Honey Pie Presents On The Mountain. With a soulful, sultry, simmering start, the song shifts upward, set up by a sax smoothly snapping your ears and hips into submission with that ever-augmenting electro-beat.

New Track: "Down" - Marian Hill

“Down,” the latest release from the duo of Marian Hill, begins with the graceful, jazz-oriented keys paving the way for Sam Gongol’s elegant vocals. As your swept into the seductive subtlety, the afterburners of a glitchy, electro-percussive beat kick in. That low, warming flame switches gears into a hyperactive call to action, before simmering down and then raising it up again. The heat rises, yet Gongol maintains her cool.

Weekend Warrior, September 4 - 7

Ok, so we admittedly were one the harshest critics of Made in America last year because of their unbelievable exclusion of talented homegrown Philly acts. Well, it seems that they are working on making it up to our city for the error of their ways with what might be the most local acts ever invited to the two-day festival.  Saturday is without a doubt when the Jay-Z-curated event brings out its heavy artillery with national and local names. If you want to find where your Philly peeps at, hanging at the Skate Stage will certainly be the place to see some familiar faces with Creepoid, Hop Along, Waxahatchee, Strand of Oaks, and Ground Up doing us proud. Meek Mill will also have the pleasure of sharing the Rocky Stage with heavy hitters Beyoncé, Modest Mouse, and De La Soul. On Sunday, you’ll find the lone Philly act Marian Hill bringing its sweet beats and alluring vocals to the Skate Stage. Ex-patriot Santigold is always a highlight of any bill that she appears on, and it’s certainly been way too long since we’ve heard anything from her. (Fingers crossed for a new album in works.) Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend, and sneak in some good drugs and drinks so you don’t have to consume any crappy, overpriced Budweiser - cheers! Made in America, Ben Franklin Parkway, 1pm, $150 (Sold Out), All Ages - Q.D. Tran
