THE EFFENS - GLAM GRUNGE AT THE BOVINE!

How bout a grunge/glam combo? Thats The Effens. Their video for "Burn Blush" is actually kind of hard to watch. It's like an episode of Fear Factor watching this worm thing hang on to some guy's face....and then it goes ON HIS EYEBALL...wipe that thing off already! Anyways the song is quite good...very heavy on the grunge rock. Simple and sludgy downstrokes on the guitar set the tone for the whole song. The Effens play Bovine Sex Club on May 13th with Ol'CD and The Leslie Spits. Kris Gies

OL'CD - "PREMIUM TRASH" EP!

These 4 Toronto garagers are back with a brand new bangin' EP. Ol'CD play rippin' garage rock with a lil bit of surf rock and a whole lotta party mixed in. The new EP titled "Premium Trash" starts with a straight up mosher "Hang Nail" which seems to tell the tale of a serious lingerer. "Not Me" is a sweet tune with some nice solo action. Everything gets a bit hectic on the last track "Paralyzed" which was a nice change in feels to finish off this record. "Premium Trash" available on their bandcamp page now! Ol'CD hits the road for the east coast today so have a look at their tour dates on their facebook page. Their Toronto release party for "Premium Trash" goes down on August 27th at Silver Dollar. - Kris Gies

CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK - TOP GUN PICKS!

Canadian Music Weeks gets goin tonight right here in Toronto. Here are some bands you should keep on your radar!

Bike Thiefs - Monday May 2 @ Bovine Sex Club

3 piece alt-punk group out of Mississauga. Their name may be grammatically incorrect but if the Maple Leafs can do it then why not Bike Thiefs too.

The Naked Wild - Tuesday May 3 @ Bovine Sex Club

Catchy pop-rock group from Toronto. Past winners of the Delis Band of the Month Poll. Formerly a 3 piece but now employ a full time drummer. Go enjoy these easy rock tunes.

Stonetrotter - Tuesday May 3 @ Cameron House

Soulful rock n roll out of Barrie. Real Canadian tunes with nice harmonies and mellow guitarmonies. Cut from the same cloth as the Sheepdogs.

Pony - Wednesday May 4 @ The Silver Dollar Room

I've been waitin' to hear more from Pony. Hoping for a new record from them soon. These gals play very nice lo-fi garage pop that'll hook you instantly.

Pet Sun - Wednesday May 4 @ Smiling Buddha AND Friday May 6 @ Lee's Palace

One of our favorites here at the Deli. Pet Sun comes from Hamilton with top notch doom garage. They are about to take over so don't miss either of these opportunities to see them "before it was cool"

Ol'CD - Thursday May 5 @ Handlebar

Garage/surf/psych/all around awesome friggin' tunes. This band will make you want to party...straight up. They go on super late on Thursday so you'll be primed and ready. Don't even think about working on Friday.

Chastity - Friday May 6 @ Velvet Underground

Very mysterious band out of Whitby. Interesting tunes with cool arrangements and a laziness to the vocals that keeps you concentrated. Alt-rock with a progessive twist.

Get a CMW Pass and enjoy! -Kris Gies

Sate is The Deli Toronto's Best Emerging Artist of 2015! 2nd Dilly Dally, 3rd OL'CD

Deli Readers,

Our Best of Toronto Poll for Emerging Artists has been - as usual - a lengthy and painstaking journey which took us through prairies of numbers, horizons filled with band names, and a dense, (mostly) joyous rain of music. We have finally reached our destination and we can announce the final results!

1. SATE
Hitherto, the husky soul voice, applied to hard-rock production, has been a forced aesthetic. An argument could be made for solo artist Sate - our Toronto Best Emerging Artist of 2015 - having rectified the situation. Unhinged rockers like "What Did I Do" and "Warrior" (streaming)convince the longer (and more fiercely) she sings.

---

2. Dilly Dally
Dilly Dally are generating a serious buzz all over right now. They toured through the USA last year and even cracked Rolling Stone's List of Bands You NEED to know. 2 guys and 2 gals in this band...so they're like ABBA...except with Pixies-esque rhythms and undeniable melodies over perfectly constructed grunge tunes. They were just announced as a headliner for CMW in May. This track "Desire" is the real deal!

---

3. Ol'CD
Ol'CD is gettin' mad love from everyone involved with the Deli these days. They were #1 on the Readers Poll and a bronze medal for the FINAL results ain't too shabby. These fellas have catchy-ass garage rock tunes infused with some surf elements. A real party band. Don't miss the chance to hop along at one of their upcoming shows.

Legend: J = Jurors,
R = Deli Readers, OS = Open Submissions

---
If you wonder how this chart came into existence, here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ Toronto scene expert (our jury) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each (3 points for the top choice, then 2 and 1). Then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Toronto produced in the year 2015, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Many Thanks to our Jurors: Mike Roth (Artist Manager for Dala), Kiran Singh (Drake), Adam Bentley (Auter Research), Mike Religa (Indie88), Ben Pearlman (Collective Concerts), Craig Laskey (Horse Shoe Tavern), Denholm Whale (The SMiling Buddha), Justin O'Heir (Artistik Management), Mar Sellars (CIUT), Adam Carter (Homegrown Hamilton), Rivoli Booking Team, Yvonne (El Mocambo).

Hope you'll find some awesome new artists you weren't aware of!

TORONTO "BEST OF 2015" READER'S POLL RESULTS!

Hey boys n' girls, the results from our "Best Of 2015" Reader's Poll are in! Congrats to the winners and thanks to everyone who listened and voted. Here are your Top 5!

1 - Ol'CD: Deadly 4 piece garage band. Throwing in some elements of punk and surf into their rock jams. They fire on all cylinders during their live shows. Awesome pick to win it all this year. Don't miss them when they come through your town! 2 - The Cardboard Crowns: Originally from Ottawa, the Cardboard Crowns find a way to mix in almost every element of music possible. They're like all dressed chips. They do folk/alt-rock/punk/ska/etc, etc. Check out their "Global Citizen" album on bandcamp. They're heading down south later this year so jump on the bandwagon now. 3 - Sedge: Bronze medal going out to Sedge. Cool 90's vibes from these fellas. Their album "Selective Reasoning" was released in August of last year. I hear some blue album Weezer, Age of Electric and Dandy Warhols influences. 4 - Shallow Waves: Of course a band with waves in the band name would have some surf influences in their tracks. However we're not talkin Beach Boys stuff...I'm talkin dirty rock n roll that'll make you dizzy with headbanging. Crunchin guitars, Dee Dee bass rips and "f*ck you" vocals. Lookin' forward to hearing more from these guys. 5 - Fat As Fuck: Roundin' out the top 5 is an experimental psychedelic outfit called Fat As Fuck. They might not be for our basic music fan but if you like your tunes a little weird...or a lot weird then go listen to Fat As Fuck. Your ears will get a barrage of noise headin' straight to the center of your cranium. Sounds like video game music at times. Good to go! Thanks again to everyone involved in the Deli Magazine Reader's Poll. Giving you all the best Toronto has to offer! -Kris Gies
