Purling Hiss

Weekend Warrior, March 10 - 12

As one descends into subterranean cement-lined confines of Underground Arts this evening, a cavalcade of the city’s heavy-psych noisemakers will meet you on the inside. Cultivating a cozy temperamental air gently permeating the auditory system with hazy melodies before escalating into the ethereal, Creepoid delivers the calm and then the searing storm.  Speaking of sear, Purling Hiss pummels and rips through a fog-filtered, psych lens, delivering raunchy riffs among unrestrained rhythms. Meanwhile, with their new album, Pleasure Suck, due out in two weeks via Tiny Engines, the disorienting but enchanting surge of The Spirit of the Beehive will be on display. Likewise, the “raw rock fury” of Ecstatic Vision, whose aptly titled forthcoming album of the same name, will be available next month via Relapse, torching a menacing mesmerizing hole in the mind in the process.

For those seeking other accommodations, the bombarding, brutal, soul-crushing stomp of Pissed Jeans will celebrate their new album, Why Love Now (Sub Pop), with a pair of sold-out release shows Friday and Saturday at Boot & Saddle and PhilaMOCA respectively.

Join the Onslaught of Noise w/Purling Hiss at JB's Oct. 30

Philly's own Purling Hiss will be reverberating through Johnny Brenda's tonight. Heavy, abrasive psychedelia with a tinge of pop this time around will be served straight to your ears by the power trio. Their sixth studio album, High Bias, which was released earlier this month via Drag City, is a watermark for Mike Polizze-led project, as much as it is a logical progression from his earlier works, and it is nothing short of a total sonic trip. Joining the onslaught of noise this evening will be local lo-fi psych outfit Honey Radar and Baltimore's Hothead. Just stay away from the brown acid, and you'll have a blast. Johnny Brenda's, 1201 N. New Music Video: "Follow You Around" - Purling Hiss

Mike Polizze of Purling Hiss takes a trek around the city, using the El as his main mode of transportation between Fishtown and West Philly in the band's latest video for the single, "Follow You Around," off the group's new album High Bias (Drag City). He also provides more hometown love, sporting a Dead Milkmen's t-shirt in Laurel Hill Cemetery, where the beloved punks recently did a special performance last month. It's a lighthearted look and sound for the normally heavy-rockin' power trio, who will have a chance to show off the nastier side of their instrumental skills that we have come to know and love this Sunday, October 30 at Johnny Brenda's, alongside Honey Radar and Hothead. New Purling Hiss Album Available for Streaming

Purling Hiss is back with its most impressive album release in years. High Bias officially drops on October 14 via Drag City, but you can now stream the record in its entirety below via NPR Music's First Listen. The power trio will also be tearing things up in Philly at Johnny Brenda's on Sunday, October 30, along with Honey Radar and DC's Hothead. (Photo by Colin McLaughlin)
