Purling Hiss & Bandname Close Out the R5 Free Summer Concert Series at Morgan’s Pier Aug. 25

Purling Hiss are headlining the last showcase that is part of R5’s Free Summer Concert series at Morgan's Pier, ushering out the summer with creaky, crackly fuzz-rock whose colors bleed together like tie-dye. Led by lo-fi acolyte Mike Polizze (also from Birds of Maya), their recent single for Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through, "Lolita," is a departure from the band's amorphous sound. Purling Hiss are still reminiscent of the early 90s, but the track sounds like it came from another band entirely. With a clear-cut swagger, and a plaintive, aggressive rant that rises above the grit of some truly raunchy guitar work, it's strange to hear Purling Hiss sans static, fuzz pedals and muffled vocals, but they've made this rock-and-roll gem pretty much irresistible. They're preceded tonight by Bandname, who definitely belong on somebody's last-beach-trip-of-the-summer playlist. Morgan's Pier, 221 N. Purling Hiss Get Awesomely Loud at JB’s June 26

Imagine the badassery of a blues guitar solo, the reckless, chaotic attitude of a punk show, and noise so all encompassing, Kevin Shields would ask to turn it down. Intense, right? Something like that’s happening tonight at Jonny Brenda’s where Deli favorites Purling Hiss are headlining. On record, these guys sound like a seriously vintage blues band on a vinyl not quite dusted properly after years spent oin the garage. Which is to say, awesome. And it only promises to be more awesome live; fresh off tours with The War on Drugs, Dr. Dog and Wilco, the grungy, unapologetic trio is known for its energetic live shows, matching the intensity of its sound in its performance. With creepy noisers Far-Out Fangtooth and the newly-signed-to-Matador The Young opening, JB’s is sure to be one of the loudest rooms in Philly this evening. Which, again, is to say, awesome. Johnny Brendas, 1201 N Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10 adv/$12 door, 21+ - Adam Downer
