Straw Hats

Weekend Warrior, October 28 - 30

Technically, Halloween falls on Monday. However, the autumnal celebration of dastardly deeds and debauchery will be in full flux this Saturday as Underground Arts opens its doors for the 7th Annual TJ Kong Halloween Costume Ball Rock N Roll Murdershow. Along with a haunting stir of booze-saturated country blues perpetuated by Kong & The Atomic Bomb, the candy-coated, Andy Moholt-led daydream down the rabbit-hole, better known as Laser Background, will provide their twist on The Zombies’ catalogue. The attitude-infused rumbling reverberation of Straw Hats and the serenading psych-pop grip of Grubby Little Hands will be joined by the slinky, streamlined, funk-fueled fire of MINKA and the rippling surf-psych wave of Ceramic Animal to seal this evening. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ - Michael Colavita

New Tangiers/Straw Hats Split EP Available for Streaming & Download

Over the weekend, local outfits Tangiers and Straw Hats issued a split EP, Is This Split. Tangiers occupy the first half of the album the chilled-out groover "Home Invasion," the blistering "Hey Mama," and the casually intense "Marijuana USA," while Straw Hats grab the reins, weaving grunge grit with a fun twist on  "Salmon," "Neighborhood Watch," and "Drones." It’s a mesh of light and heavy that meets somewhere in the middle.

Debut Straw Hats EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Garage-punks Straw Hats just released their debut self-titled EP, which was recorded, mixed and mastered by Ryan Farber. The band features The Districts's frontman Rob Grote and drummer Braden Lawrence reversing rolls and letting go of some pent up aggression. The two are also joined by pal Breshon Martzell on bass and vocals, and the album is available on cassette via Gawk Records.

Straw Hats & Spill Opening for Kississippi at PhilaMOCA Feb. 18

Garage-punk trio Straw Hats, featuring members of The Districts, and indie-rock outfit Spill, which houses former members of Placeholders and We Were Skeletons, set out on the road together earlier this month for what was dubbed their "Valentine's Tour." After tearing up DIY spots in the South and Midwest, the gang will be coming home tonight to a talent-filled, polarizing bill at PhilaMOCA. Headlining this evening will be Kississippi, who has enchanted the blogosphere with their latest EP We Have No Future, We're All Doomed (Softspeak Records). You'll also find Maine transplants Friendship warming things up with their simmering folk tunes. Come enjoy the peaks and valleys that will be traveled throughout the evening! PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7:30pm, $7-$10, All Ages (Straw Hats Photo by Gilbo Gabbins) - Alexis V.

Weekend Warrior, January 15 - 17

Johnny Brenda’s is hosting a night of premier Philadelphia garage-punk bands that will (despite the high ceilings) make you feel like you’re at an L.A. basement show circa 1979. Starting the night off is Straw Hats, a noisy band that shares members with the more mild and understated group The Districts, showing just how far their members’ musical breadth reaches. After Straw Hats is The Whips, who apply a layer of rouge to their garage-rock foundation, landing them somewhere in between Dictators-style glam punk and Replacements power pop. Daddy Long Legs is a strangely terrestrial name for an avant space-pop group with a sound and imagination that spans galaxies - and genre. There are some songs that have a whiff of Dirty Projectors style melodic complexity about them, while others thrust straight forward with thick fuzz and a bluesy, Black Keys simplicity. Headlining the event is Residuels, a band with a remarkable resume supporting bands such as The Buzzcocks, The Spits, and The Sonics. Led by Justin Pittney (ex-Moon Women), Residuels harness the disheveled sound of proto-punk inspired garage pioneers of the early 80s like Gun Club and The Cramps, successfully channeling the uninhibited energy of that era’s basement scene and transplanting it into the present day. Keep a watch out for them! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ - Bryce Woodcock
