The weather’s unseasonably warm temperatures may push one out the door in search of good musical times. Luckily the docket is full of excellent opportunities. Among the plethora of performances on the slate, First Unitarian Church plays host to a pair. Proceeds from tonight’s Indie Pop Prom will go the Pink Fund. As for the billing, the incisive, empowering songwriting of Sad13, a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis (of Speedy Ortiz), keeps things real, delivering in a contagious, free-flowing, instrumental platform. Similarly, Sports navigate personal depths through an avalanche of momentous pop rock. The blooming, experimental jangle of Mercury Girls and the nostalgic, melodic pop-punk of Swanning shape a stellar evening, which also includes headliners, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Meanwhile, Saturday’s 10th annual Two Piece Fest will be offering an all-day affair, exploring the full spectrum of dynamics among duos. Creeping into one’s foggy, THC-filled mind, the cosmic conquests of folk-psych outfit Shadow Band celebrate their freshly landed album, Wilderness Of Love (Mexican Summer), with a release show this Saturday at Baird Mansion Atrium. Likewise, the trio of No Thank You sets sail with their new album, Jump Ship (Lame-O Records), with a show tonight at Everybody Hits. The album exhibits an impassioned, emotive exploration with a cathartic air that makes one stay onboard. - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, Aug. 19-21

Treat Y’r Self Fest returns to PhilaMOCA this Saturday for its second year. The benefit for the annual March to End Rape Culture (co-presented with Pussy Division) will be hosting a day of rad activities to create a safe, inclusive space that is accessible for all ages. Throughout the day and into the evening, you’ll find local favorites like Dreambook, Swanning, and Motherwhore coming together with artist from all over the country to donate their talents to help unify a community for an important cause. Punk legend Alice Bag (of The Bags) will be headlining the music showcase with a new album in tow! And for the first time, Treat Y’r Self Fest will be screening a documentary; Stories From the She Punks was directed by Helen Reddington (The Chefs) and Gina Birch (The Raincoats), and it chronicles “stories of women musicians from the punk-inspired bands of the 70s.” Music critic and author Jenn Pelly will be introducing the film. Kevin Attics (Mercury Girls, Literature) will also be spinning between sets, and Samantha Gurry will be creating some dope hand-cut animated visuals. So come out & TREAT Y’R SELF! Swanning Album Release Show at PhilaMOCA May 31

Cynthia Ann Schemmer (Radiator Hospital) received her first guitar, at the age of thirteen, from her mother, who had always been supportive of her interests. After her passing, Cynthia lost the desire to write her own music, and found solace in playing the songs of others. However, with her debut album Drawing Down The Moon, released via Salinas Records, under the moniker Swanning, Schemmer is taking a "huge step forward" artistically and paying homage to the woman who had always believed in her abilities. Tonight, you can take part in the celebration of art and life at PhilaMOCA with Swanning's album release show. Debut Swanning EP Available for Streaming

Drawing Down The Moon, the debut EP from Cynthia Ann Schemmer's (Radiator Hospital) musical vehicle known as Swanning, won’t be officially released via Salinas Records until this Friday, May 27; however, it’s streaming over at Stereogum. So, the wait is over. On first listen, the album has an ever-evolving, jagged, melodic intimacy. A First Time's the Charm Fundraiser at The Waiting Room featuring Swanning Waxahatchee & More May 19

Drawing Down The Moon the debut EP from the quartet of Swanning led by Cynthia Ann Schemmer (of Radiator Hospital) will be released will be released on May 27 via Salinas Records. This evening at the Waiting Room Schemmer is set to perform as a solo act. “Sleep My Pretties”, the EP’s first single offers a balance of steady backend thump as her vocals are a blend of composed calm with an underlying agitated aggression. This evening she may provide furtherer insight into the framework of the new record/project. Tonight’s show, which is a fundraiser for A First Time’s The Charm, includes the gritty garage-pop of Marge. The emotive-charged loner post-punk of Dog Tears (formerly known as Girl Dog) hit you with a sense of unguarded immediacy. Topping things of Waxahatchee provides personal narratives that offer fly on the wall perspective revealing relatable imagery delivered with a relaxed yet resounding impact.
