XRay Eyeballs

Total Slacker, Hunters, XRay Eyeballs + Cassie Ramone at The Studio on 02.14

A not to be missed Valentine’s Day show is slated to go down at Webster Hall’s Studio in Manhattan on 2/14. Presented by Kristina Tequila, the star studded night will be headlined by scene veterans Total Slacker (pictured and streaming below). Their classic track “Crystal Necklace” set a standard for that low down, creep-along groove with appropriately reverberated boy-girl tandem vocals. Expect more of that and surely some bowl-cut fueled guitar jam-outs too. Hunters have been making waves all over the place this year, and one would expect their performance on this night to be just as punk-rock manic as recent shows of theirs have demonstrated. XRay Eyeballs spent a good portion of last year touring all through Europe. That kind of road-honed experience will surely be on display as they continue to showcase songs from their latest album “Splendor Squalor.” Opening the night will be none other than the tireless Cassie Ramone, who appears to be effortlessly juggling gigs between her bands The Babies, Vivian Girls and now these solo acoustic shows. -Dave Cromwell

Weekly Feature: Xray Eyeballs - live at Shea Stadium on April 14 with Zulus

Apart from the creeptastic image they've come to adopt, the Xray Eyeballs are actually a relatively fun, garage rockin' group.
While a lot of this Brooklyn band's imagery consists of skulls, crystal meth and other touchy subjects... deep down, the band's songwriter O.J. San Felipe is a hopeless romantic, and it shows on catchy songs like "Escape From That Girl" and "Fake Wedding". Helping tug at the heartstrings are accompanying vocalists Carly Rabalais and Jay High, lending soulful ooh's and aah's that help round out Felipe's strung out whine.
Like The Beets and Deerhunter, Xray Eyeballs revel in the lo-fi. If you'd never heard of this band before, you might be convinced they were a lost 7-inch-only garage band from your dad's youth. While they do share much in common with Nuggets-style jangle and 4-track charm, they have a Misfits-style gore that leads to some spooky results in the video for the LP's first single Crystal.

Xray Eyeballs and Dream Diary play Kanine Christmas show on 12.3

Since Leo from Kanine Records is very good at finding promising emerging local bands (he discovered Grizzly Bear, Surfer Blood and Chairlift among many others), it's always interesting to see who is playing his label's shows. On December 3rd Kanine will celebrate the holiday season with in house, folk-punk band We Are Country Mice, ethereal psych poppers Dream Diary, celebrated indie rockers Grooms, and lo fi combo Xray Eyeballs, a band we've never covered before, and which sounds a little like a punkier version of Crystal Stilts, we are digging their myspace songs, so check them out.
